Most commercial spaces around Moncton are still lit by fixtures somebody chose a long time ago. They work, so nobody thinks about them — until you notice the room is dim, the light is yellow, and the fixtures are quietly drawing power every hour the doors are open.
We recently took a local business through that swap: every old halogen fixture out, LED in. Here is what the job involves and what actually changes afterwards.
What we changed out
The job was straightforward in shape: pull out the old halogen fixtures throughout the space and replace them with LED. On a working business that means planning around the hours the space is in use, and leaving each area finished before moving to the next.
Halogen has one real advantage — it is already installed. Everything else runs against it. It draws far more power for the same light, it runs hot, and the lamps do not last.
Two ways to do it: bulbs or fixtures
Not every upgrade means replacing the whole fixture. There are two routes, and the right one depends on what is on your ceiling today:
- LED bulbs into existing fixtures. The lower-cost path when the housings are in good shape and you like how the space is laid out.
- New LED fixtures. More work, but you get to fix the layout at the same time — where the light lands, how even it is, and what the ceiling looks like.
Both cut what the lighting draws. Which one makes sense for your building is a walkthrough conversation, not a quote you can give over the phone.
The part owners notice first isn’t the bill
The savings are the reason most owners call. But the change people react to is the light itself. As one of our electricians puts it in the video:
Once somebody goes from a dimly lit office space to a perfectly lit office space, it is just crème de la crème. It is the best thing to get from a customer.
A dim room makes everything in it feel older than it is. Staff work under that light all day, and customers read it as how the business is run. Brightness and colour are the parts of an LED upgrade you feel the first morning, before a single power bill arrives.
Where an LED upgrade makes the most sense
The math is best where lights run long hours — offices, retail floors, shops and warehouses that are lit through the whole working day. The more hours a fixture is on, the faster the difference in draw adds up.
It is also the easiest upgrade to phase. There is no reason to do a whole building at once; plenty of businesses start with the areas customers and staff spend the most time in, and work outward.
