It usually starts small. A light that flickers when the dryer kicks on. A breaker that trips every time someone plugs in the space heater. An outlet that feels a little warm.
It’s easy to put off. But electrical problems rarely fix themselves, and the wiring behind your walls is the one part of your home you can’t see until something goes wrong.
That’s where a licensed electrician comes in. Here’s why it matters for homeowners in Moncton and across PEI, and what to expect when one of our techs shows up at your door.
Signs it’s time to call an electrician
As the weather cools and the heaters, slow cookers and holiday lights come out, your electrical system works harder. Call a pro if you notice:
- Lights that flicker or dim when an appliance turns on
- Breakers that trip again and again
- Outlets or switches that are warm, buzzing or discoloured
- A burning smell near an outlet, switch or your electrical panel
- Outlets or circuits that have stopped working
- You’re adding something big, like a Level 2 EV charger, a hot tub or a new appliance
If you smell burning or see smoke or sparks, don’t wait for an appointment. Get everyone out and call 911.
Why “I’ll just do it myself” can cost you more
Swapping a switch looks simple in a video. What the video doesn’t show is what’s inside your wall: older wiring, an overloaded circuit, or a connection someone got wrong years ago.
A licensed electrician is trained to find those problems, not just the symptom. They work to the Canadian Electrical Code and know how it applies in your province.
Permits matter too. In New Brunswick, only licensed electrical contractors can apply for a wiring permit, and working without a required permit adds a special inspection fee. On PEI, permits are required for all electrical work, and only licensed contractors can apply for them.
Unpermitted work can come back to bite you later, whether it’s flagged by an inspector, your insurer, or a buyer’s home inspector when you sell. When we do the job, the permit is on us.
What a LuMar service call looks like
Every home is different, but every service call follows the same three steps.
Tell us what’s going on. Call us or book online in about a minute. Describe the problem and we’ll get you on the schedule. Then we show up when we say we will, in a marked LuMar van with the tools for the job.
We assess and quote. A licensed electrician looks at the work and walks you through what it needs and what it costs, so you decide before we start. A tripping breaker could be an overloaded circuit, a failing device or a wiring issue, so we troubleshoot to find the real cause, not just the symptom.
We do it right. Code-compliant work from a COR® certified team, cleaned up when we leave, backed by our 100% satisfaction guarantee.
